Maureen Toohey, former owner of Salon DaMaur in Somers, NY, has opened a new eco-chic hair salon in Brewster, Fresh Organic Salon Solutions. Toohey, who has more than 25 years’ experience in the beauty industry, says she is opening the new business in response to consumer demand for organic salon services, a demand she saw when she owned Salon DaMaur, the first natural salon and organic spa in that area. “The salon beautified Somers,” she says. “Clients used to have to travel to White Plains and Manhattan to get a great color and hairstyle naturally. Now I’m beautifying Brewster.”
The mother of a 14-year-old daughter who loves beauty products, Toohey says she has a commitment to the community and working toward changing salons for the better. As a regional educator for Organic Salon Systems, she says she is educating operators about the hazardous products widely used in the beauty industry and teaching advanced techniques for using organic products.
“At Fresh Organic Salon, we mix color openly, not behind a curtain,” she says. “Clients have our guarantee that the products we use are the safest, cleanest ones available today. Unfortunately, many companies in the industry have very deep pockets and get away with claiming to be natural when they’re not. The word organic is often misused.”
